My daily field setup

The gear I actually use when I hunt with my dog

This page is not a catalog. It is a short list of the clothes, cameras, dog rewards and shotgun setup I rely on in real upland hunts. Some links are affiliate links, which means I may earn a small commission if you buy through them, at no extra cost to you.

I share this because it might save you time and bad purchases, especially if you are just starting upland hunting with a dog.

Upland hunting gear laid out for a day in the field

What I wear in the field

These are the main pieces I wear on a normal day of upland hunting. They are not perfect, but they have survived real seasons, long walks and bad weather.

Upland cap

What I wear

Upland cap

Sun, brush and camera-friendly fit

Lightweight upland cap I use on every hunt. It keeps the bill stiff enough for cameras and stays comfortable all day.

Upland vest

What I wear

Upland vest

Game bag and shell storage

Simple upland vest with enough room for shells and birds. I do not use the turkey seat, but the pockets and back game bag are perfect.

Hunting shirt

What I wear

Hunting shirt

Base layer for mixed weather

This is the shirt I wear most days. It breathes well when walking hard and dries fast between hunts.

Hunting socks

What I wear

Hunting socks

Comfort for long walks

Thick enough to protect your feet, thin enough to avoid overheating. I use these socks with my upland boots on every long day.

My camera setup

To show real hunts and dog work, I combine a primary camera, a secondary angle and a point of view camera. This is the exact setup I use in the field.

Primary camera

Main camera

Primary camera

Main hunt footage

This is the primary camera I use to capture the hunt. It handles low light at golden hour and gives me reliable footage in the field.

Secondary camera

Alternative angle and backup

My secondary camera when I want a second angle or a safer position from brush, dust and weather.

Point of view shots

I use Ray-Ban Meta for true point of view shots. You see what I see when the dog locks up and birds flush.

Dog rewards I use after training

These toys are not magic, but they have worked consistently for my dogs as rewards and as a way to help them settle after work.

Calm chewing after work

I use this classic Kong as a reward and to help the dog settle after training. It is not a bird toy, it is a pressure release.

Fetch and carry work

These dummy birds help with carry, delivery and soft mouth. I do not use them as real bird replacements, only to shape delivery.

Durable bone

Chew outlet

I keep this bone as a controlled chewing outlet. It protects furniture and keeps young dogs busy on non training days.

I am sharing this part for transparency. Always follow local laws and your own safety standards around firearms and ammunition.
